SSTCGO: Army of the Gods // Author’s Message
The year was 2007, after the impressive Hades OVAS; Saint Seiya news `disappeared´ from the face of Earth, again. The only thing keeping alive the “myth” were the on-line communities. Until then, SS games were few and often: painfully bad. I clearly remember, at that time I could not understand how such an astonishing story could be so ignored, so undervaluated. So forgotten.
Influenced by this, and also inspired by the famous games TCGs like Magic and Y!, Which were especially important those days, I decided to design a “homemade” game using part of my useless nerd `knowledge´ in the series, trying to remain faithful to all the characters from the classic series and making a Card Game that kept up the particular `spirit´ of the masterpiece and TCGs in general.
At that time, my brother, KG [KillerGoD] was studying a programming career and suggested converting the TCG in an online, multi-player, totally free project; which I thought was an excellent visionary-idea. Let’s say that at this stage, this kind of on-line projects were scarce, The `Boom´ of the on-line market had not yet come, much less common were `virtual games´ related to battle-cards and there were even fewer cases of ` free´ projects, those were almost “a bad word” among the companies and players.
So my brother would program the game while learning about the language in question, there also was an educational aspect behind the project. We knew it was an ambitious and perhaps absurd dream, we also knew that programming a `video-game´, no matter how simple it was, was one of most difficult things in the software world. Then , we would realize that it was even MORE difficult than THAT.
Further on we would meet a user in one of the on-line forums: NeoAiolia who helped with the graphic design, since our initial designs were too simple. We assembled those new designs replacing the old ones right-away.
Work, study and this “silly dream” absorbed all the time we had, and brought us obvious family issues, because -rationally- they did not understand what “on the world” we were creating that took us so much time, and why we were wasting time on “that thing”. It was not easy, nor is it now. But we were determined to finish at least a playable project, unlike other unfinished projects of SS.
After many twists and turns, the SSTCGO PC was launched in December 2009. Throughout this stage, we had purchased a CPU we used as a local server, we had it `ON´ all daytime, but at night the noise and infernal heat in my room forced us to keep the server off, so the game was online .. .Only during the daylight! 😛
Thanks to a request for donations started later, we could hire a VPS due to multiple complaints from users of other time zones.
Since its inception many things happened:
* Bugs, Bugs everywhere.
* A failed FB version.
* Cheats Hacks and things like that.
* A failed international version.
* Changes Forum moderation and disadventures like those.
Years and players, passed, and so our obligations of the “real life”. Luckily we found people like [Geolkang], who was added to the “staff” in order to keep SSTCGO alive. KG and I, we were always there, behind the scenes, keeping the server, even when our community involvement decreased greatly, precisely because of all the personal problems we faced. We were there.
We arrive to the 2013 year. Things changed a lot for SS, apparently `the respective companies´ finally realized the potential of this manga; yes the one that remained ‘for decades’ in the drawer of forgetfulness. New anime, OVAs and next-generation video games. They realized they could squeeze all the ‘juice’ of a good series.
Meanwhile, our humble project, despite being neglected, remained online, but only for Spanish speakers. We decided, for the “good times”, develop an English mobile- game conversion, as these things had grown exponentially with the appearance of Smartphones, and to be honest something bothered us: by the number of “successful” mobile-games of questionable quality. So, the user Willitox offered to help with the new designs for this version which we called “SSTCGO 2” or “SSTCGO 2.0”.
SFteam has a total of 4 members, Geolkang being in charge of the original version, while KG, Willitox and me would keep in charge of the second one.
I want to be clear, we are not a ‘company’ , we have no employees, do not have facilities , we haven’t even got a good internet connection or a current generation PC , we live in a house in a humble neighborhood, working in not related stuff ( I am a Chemistry teacher for example) and finishing our college’s degree .
We are individuals, like you, like your friends or your family, just fans of the series and compulsive dreamers. To the extent that we sacrifice, money, time and energy this project. We are aware that we can not compare with any company or any of its existent products, because everything we do is ‘home-made’. Anyway there is no turning back now. But keep in mind that, we take long because we are FEW.
Beyond all that Drama, I just want to welcome you to our new site and game and encourage you to enjoy the game and the community itself.
